    • 1). Visit an eye-wear retailer, such as Pearle Vision or America's Best, or a retail store with an optometry department. These include stores such as Wal-Mart, Target and Costco. These vision centers have licensed optometrists working in the store.

    • 2). Make an appointment for an eye exam. You may not need an appointment at retail stores and can have an eye exam when you walk in. The doctor will examine the internal and external areas of your eyes to determine the condition of your optic nerve, retina, cornea, muscles, lens, iris, blood vessels, pupils, eyelashes and eyelids.

    • 3). Obtain a prescription. If your doctor's diagnosis includes a recommendation for corrective eyeglasses, you will receive a prescription for lenses.

    • 4). Choose frames for your lenses from the available selection. You can pay for your order by cash, check, credit or debit card. The staff at the vision center will make an appointment for you to pick up your glasses. Your order may be ready within a week.

    • 5). Pick up your eyeglasses. Test your glasses at the vision center to ensure that they are effective and fit well. Some vision centers offer a return policy if you are not satisfied.
