How Does Maca Work?
- Maca, or lepidium meyenii, is a radish-shaped root-like vegetable that is grown high in the Andes Mountains of South America. Maca is a staple in the Peruvian diet. It has been used in the area even before the Incan civilization inhabited the area. The maca vegetable was, and still is, both a source of food and medicine. Maca is high in many essential nutrients and has been proven to aid in fertility. It is also called the "Peruvian ginseng" because of the energy it provides to users.
- No one really knows how maca works, but there are some theories. The majority center on the high amount of proteins in the vegetable. The proteins in maca fuel the body in its daily functions. The high nutrient content also aids the body in building immunity or fighting off illness.
- Another well known and proven property of maca is its benefits in male fertility. Maca has been proven to increase the sperm count. It is also said to aid in male sexual enhancement, but this statement hasn't been proven. Scientists do know that the chemical arginine is found in high amounts in maca. Arginine does increase sperm production. The chemical histadine is said to be released during the height of the sexual experience. Maca has high amounts of this chemical. This is why many believe that maca is a natural aphrodisiac.
