The DeLonghi EC702 also has a useful anti-drip design.  There are two separate thermostats, one controlling the water and one controlling the steam pressure. This enables the ability to make espresso or cappuccino at the optimum temperature.

Features and Specifications

This machine makes espresso using a self-priming 15-bar pump. The unit has a stainless steel boiler. There is a dual filter holder integrated including Sempre Crema and ESE filters which makes this machine perform for E.S.E. pods.

This espresso machine has 2 thermostats: one for brewing, another for steaming. Moreover, it has a steam wand and an adjustable frother which allows setting it depending on your cup. It makes a whole process easier and more convenient. The removable drip tray is also a part of this unit. It makes the cleaning process so much easier and quick.

There is a 44-ounce water tank used in this machine so you will be able to make 5-1/2 cups of coffee. It has a cup warmer that will help keeping your drink warmer and more savoury.

DeLonghi EC702 is 11 x 9.1 x 11.6 inches of size, so it can be easily put to any place in your kitchen. Together with this espresso machine you will also get a 1-year limited warranty.

The Pros:
  • The machine performs well for a 15 bar espresso/cappuccino machine. It produces perfect crema, nice strong steam, and it cleans easily. Having a stainless steel finish, it looks great. Being an espresso machine, it does not have an auto turn on and off function.
  • The timing of the DeLonghi EC702 is different every time as the water pumps through, and requires manual operation depending on the desired drink. This is not a push button machine. The steam nozzle will only leak if it is not closed. It is necessary to put the lever back to the closed position all the way, on the DeLonghi EC702 then water begins to spray out.
  • When it is not in steam mode and the valve is open the DeLonghi EC702 sprays water, which is what it is designed to do (for tea, etc.). It is not that complicated, and requires common sense to operate successfully.
  • The machine heats up fast, makes a delicious cup of cappuccino or espresso and is quick to clean up. The warming rack on the top is well designed. Simply turn on the DeLonghi EC702 in the morning.
  • It uses finely ground espresso, not ground espresso for drip machines or stovetops. The DeLonghi EC702 does not use ‘pods". It is for brewing a real cup with fresh grounds.
  • If you can work simple machinery and like espresso/cappuccino from freshly ground beans, the DeLonghi EC702 is ideal for this.

The Cons:

The machine is slower in comparison with steam driven machines and requires attention while brewing. It doesn't make crema automatically and it requires a separate frothing device for cappuccinos. The size of the brew is fixed, and different sized machines are needed to brew for one person or 3-4 people.

Pump driven appliances are always more expensive. The DeLonghi EC702 has lots of parts and electronics which make them prone to wear and tear through regular usage. Brewing requires the full attention of the coffee maker, and correct techniques are required for optimum results. The DeLonghi EC702 needs priming too so t is not ideal for those people who want a quick espresso.

Overall Rating

Finally, the quality of the Espresso Maker is superior. Pump driven machines definitively give a better tasting coffee, but require the user to learn basic techniques and procedures.

Taste can vary, so it is preferable to experiment with the DeLonghi EC702 using different brands of coffee and techniques, (grinds, degrees of roast, strength) until a satisfactory beverage is produced that appeals to individual taste. The secret is in finding the best brand, which does not necessarily have to be the most expensive brand. The same high quality espresso that are available in gourmet restaurants are just as achievable using the DeLonghi EC702. A definite connoisseur approach can be reached using the DeLonghi EC702 to ensure consistent satisfaction.
