How to Push a Lawnmower
- 1). Walk over the grass you intend to cut and remove sticks and other debris that could damage the motor, or do other damage if ejected from the lawn mower's undercarriage.
- 2). Adjust your mower's height to allow you to only cut 1/3 of the grass height at one time. Cutting too low (called "scalping") will damage the grass, allow more sunlight to weeds and cause the soil to dry faster from the sun.
- 3). Start the mower on the grass, not the pavement. Pushing a mower from the pavement to the grass can cause the blades to "scalp" the edge of the lawn.
- 4). Walk behind the mower, pushing at a moderate pace. Your mower handle should not touch your body, and your arms should not be fully extended.
- 5). Mow the grass in different directions with each mow to keep the lawn from growing in patterns.
