How to Make a Teapot Pinata

16
    • 1). Blow up a large balloon until it is very round, but not too oblong. This is the base for your teapot piñata, and will become the teapot body.

    • 2). Rip newspaper into strips around 1 inch wide and 10- to 15 inches long. Don't cut the newspaper, as you need the ripped edges to help absorb the mache mixture.

    • 3). Mix 3 cups of craft glue to 1 cup of water in a bucket. Dip a newspaper strip into the glue mixture and paste it onto the balloon. Continue dipping newspaper strips and setting them over the balloon, overlapping the edges of the previous strips by about 1/4 inch. Apply 4 layers in this way.

    • 4). Leave the covered balloon to dry overnight. Cover the bucket so the glue mixture doesn't dry.

    • 5). Cut a handle shape out of cardboard, and cut a spout shape out of cardboard. Bend the base of the handle and spout shapes and place them onto each side of the balloon, taping them onto the balloon by the bent portion of cardboard.

    • 6). Cover the balloon, spout and handle with another 4 layers of papier-mache (the glue-covered newspaper strip) and leave it overnight to dry.

    • 7). Rip up some newspaper into very small squares; around 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch. Mix this into the glue mixture to create a papier-mache pulp, almost like molding clay. Use the pulp to bulk out the handle and spout and give them dimension. Leave to dry for 2 days.

    • 8). Apply a final 4 layers of newspaper strips over the entire teapot and leave to dry for overnight.

    • 9). Paint the teapot piñata in bright colors and designs and let dry; around 2 hours. Use scissors to cut a hole in the top of the teapot for a lid. This will also pop the balloon inside.

Braid some twine into approximately 6-inch lengths. Poke two holes an inch apart on either side of the rim of the lid hole, then thread the braids through the holes, tying knots on the inside of the teapot, so that there is a loop on either side of the hole in the top of the teapot for hanging the piñata. Fill the cavity with wrapped candy, then tape the lid back in place.
