The Art of Teeth Whitening

10
Most people reading this article would tend to disagree with the title of the article saying that teeth whitening have today become a science in itself. This is because of the standardization of the procedure and availability of teeth whitening products in the open market. However, for dentists and also for individuals who try teeth whitening products at home, the results obtained vary. This is because of the degree to which discoloration of teeth has taken place and also because of the sensitivity issues involved.

Yellow teeth are a result of our own bad food habits

Some people seem to have whiter teeth than others. The color of our teeth is the color of the porous structure that we have over our teeth. It is called enamel and it is made up of tubules. Consumption of acidic food items, tea, coffee, alcohol etc blocks these tubules. With passage of time, things like tobacco from smoking and tea and coffee cause staining of our teeth. Cleaning and brushing our teeth with ordinary toothpaste does not remove these stains and yellowness of our teeth much to the chagrin of most of the people. This is where bleaching agents come handy, as they have the ability to penetrate the enamel over our teeth and remove the stains from inside.

Organic part of the enamel causes staining of teeth

The enamel over our teeth is formed by mostly inorganic compounds (95%). However, there is also organic matrix that makes up nearly 5% of this enamel. All the staining of our teeth is a result of the stains collecting on this organic matrix. Hydrogen peroxide is the main ingredient in most of the teeth whitening products being sold in the market. This peroxide releases active oxygen to oxidize the stains that get removed due to this active oxygen. Irrespective of the reason causing the stain to get deposited in the organic matrix of your enamel, you can be rest assured that the bleaching agent will take it out. The bleaching action takes place due to the active oxygen atom that is present in hydrogen peroxide.

Some people have sensitive enamel

There are many people who stay away from teeth cleaning products, as they are worried of the safety of their enamel or the covering over their teeth. It is true that some people have sensitive teeth, as the enamel layer over their teeth is thinner than the layer over the teeth of other people. But the bleaching products available in the market come in different strengths and you can check the strength before using the product, so that it does not cause harm to the enamel on your teeth. In fact, it is prudent to consult your dentist before embarking on your mission ‘teeth whitening', as he can suggest the right strength of peroxide solution required to whiten your teeth.

‘Teeth whitening' has come a long way since the days when dentists charged a whopping sum to clean your teeth to give you a million dollar smile.  You can today hope to get whiter teeth, sitting at home with the help of products available in the market.
