How Does USB Work?

USB as a File Storage Device

    • As a storage device, often referred to as a jump drive, USB works like a plug-n-play device. This means that the device can be introduced to a computer, then disconnected without having to restart or reboot the operating system on the computer. The benefit of this file storage device is obvious, for it can share information between computers or other devices in an instant without the need of special drivers to operate. Files can be transferred quickly form one work station to another, as well as to other portable devices like laptops. Printers also have a USB port, which allows for digital cameras to upload images or photos to a printer without having a computer working between the devices. Combined with the power of flash memory, USB drives store memory more effectively and safely.

USB as an alternative power source for low consumption devices

    • Possibly one of the more recent uses for USB comes in the form of alternative or backup power for portable devices. For example, a portable data assistant (PDA), a mini laptop, game-pad, or camera that is low on power can be juiced up very quickly just by adding a USB power supply device in to the USB port. Portable devices, such as PDA's or cameras, can be connected through a cradle that has a female end for the USB power supply to mate with. In the case of mini laptops, you need only plug the USB power supply device directly into the USB port on the laptop. Having a USB power supply device is an excellent addition to your arsenal of portable devices. You never know when you might need a little extra juice for your portable devices.

Multiple USB devices with a USB hub

    • With roughly two billion USB devices around the world, and each computer containing a USB port being able to handle over a hundred USB devices simultaneously, it would be a real shame not to take advantage of USB hubs. A USB hub is a devices that plugs into your USB port on your computer, then allows at least two USB connections to be made through the same shared port on your computer. Some relatively cheap USB hubs have about four or more USB connections on the face of the device. With USB becoming ever more popular, CD's and DVD's are already disappearing from the new mini laptops. Purchasing a hub for your USB devices can allow one workstation to connect all kinds of peripherals and devices into a single USB network.
