How to Merge Two Images - Create Beautiful Panoramic Scenes

21
A lot of people these days have a digital camera, whether it be a compact camera or a full-blown digital single lens reflex camera.
While these cameras are great and they have a lot of options, sometimes you want to do things that your camera just can't do.
Merging two images for example.
Let's say you're walking outside and you see this beautiful landscape that you want to capture with your camera.
Unless you have a wide-angle lens there's no way you can capture that scene in one photograph.
That's when merging two or more images comes into play.
In this article I will explain ways how you can merge your images.
The first technique I will tell you can be used for creating panoramic pictures like the outside scene I described above.
The second technique I will tell you can be used for just about any image merging.
Following that I will give you the best programs you can use to try these techniques on.
So let's get going.
If you want to create a panoramic scene you are going to need a couple of things.
First, of course, a camera to take your photographs with.
Next you will need a tripod.
You don't really need one but it will greatly improve the quality of your final image if you do.
Third, you are going to need some photo editing software.
You can use either Photoshop or GIMP, which is free.
When you take your pictures you want to divide the scene in 4 - 5 parts.
Keep in mind that you are going to overlay those pictures so check that the right side of your first picture is the left side of your second picture.
Do this until you have your whole scene captured.
Next, load up your images in your photo editing software.
If you use Photoshop you're in luck.
Photoshop has a feature that automatically matches your photographs and creates a panoramic picture for you.
To use this go to file - automate - photomerge and load your files.
If you use GIMP it is going to take a little longer.
Make a new file the height of your photographs and width something like 10000 px.
Load your images into GIMP and put them into one file.
Take your second image and change its opacity to something like 20 percent.
Now try to match your second pictures left side to your first pictures right side.
Do this to your other photographs as well.
This will create a panoramic picture that shows the whole scene.
The second technique works for Photoshop as well as GIMP.
Open the two images you want to merge and put them into the same file.
Go to the layers panel and add a layer mask.
To do this in Photoshop you have to click in the little button next to the "fx" button.
For GIMP you can just right-click and select "add layer mask.
" Whenever you paint something inside of the layer mask it will either be black or white.
White means that part of the picture is visible and black means it's not visible.
If you add a black to white gradient for example you can merge two images together nicely.
I hope this helped you out a bit and I hope you will have fun with this.
