How to Build a Children's Mounted Bookcase
- 1). Lay two lengths of the lumber on a flat surface. Butt one of the 1-inch sides of one piece of lumber up against the 3-inch side of the another length of lumber. This forms an L shape.
- 2). Remove one of the pieces of lumber long enough to put some wood glue where the two pieces will meet. Replace the other piece of lumber and hold them together using clamps until the glue dries. Make three of these sets.
- 3). Drill 1/8-inch holes for the screws, every 4 inches, where the two pieces of lumber meet. Secure the two pieces together using the 2-inch wood screws.
- 4). Place a dowel along the length of the bottom of each shelf. Get it as close to the edge as possible. Screw the dowel to the bottom portion of the shelf to use as a stopper and to keep the books from sliding off the shelf. Put screws at either end and one in the middle to secure.
- 5). Arrange the three sets of the book rack shelves so that they have the desired distance between them. Use the sizes of your child's books to help you determine how far apart the shelves should be.
- 6). Measure the height of the bookcase from the top of the first shelf to the bottom of the third shelf. Cut two more pieces of lumber to this length.
- 7). Lay those lengths flat on your work surface. Rearrange the shelves on top of these, placing one flush with the top, another flush with the bottom edge and the third right in the middle. Use screws to attach the shelves to the frame.
- 8). Pre-drill 1/8-inch holes in the frame for hanging on the wall. Drill holes on either side of the frame at the top, bottom and middle. Hold the frame up to the wall and use a pencil through the pre-drilled holes to mark where to pre-drill holes into the wall, try to drill at a stud for extra support, but this is not necessary. Make sure the shelves are low enough for the child to easily reach, starting about 1-foot off the floor. Drill the holes into the wall.
- 9). Insert wall anchors into the holes in the wall. Hold the bookcase back up to the wall and insert the 4-inch screws through the bookcase frame and into the anchors.
