Now that you have built your own shed, you will need to get access to it especially if you have built a foundation that takes the floor of the shed above ground level.
You will want to get the lawn mower and other heavy equipment into the shed without breaking you back in the process, so a set of DIY shed ramps become a must have item.
However, there are some things that you have to get right when making these ramps.
First of all, you need to work out the incline of the ramps.
If it is too steep, then they will not be if much use to you.
You need to aim for a slope of 3 inches rise for every twelve inches of vertical height you need to cover.
So, let us say that your shed is on a foundation that is twelve inches above ground level.
You need to find a point that is forty-eight inches away from the base of the foundation.
Just think of it as a step up into your shed and measure out from the bottom of the step.
Now, put a peg in the round at that point and measure the distance from the point where the peg enters the ground right up to the top of the step.
This tells you the actual size of the ramp that gives you the correct slope.
The distance out from the base of the step is actually four times the height of the step.
Next, make sure that the ramp is strong enough to take all the weight that may be put on it.
Think about adding your own weight to that of your lawn mower as you will be pushing it up the ramp.
The ramp needs to take that combined weight, so use at least four inch by four inch timber for the main frame and cover it with a heavy piece of three quarter inch marine plywood.
Lastly, think about how slippery the ramp can get especially when it is wet.
Cover the surface of the ramp with a good non-slip material, rubber is ideal for providing a reasonable non-slip surface.
