Oklahoma Nursing Scholarships
- The University of Oklahoma, or OU, through its College of Nursing makes numerous scholarships available every year. Each award has its own set of qualifications, but three factors are universal. The student must be accepted into the College of Nursing, able to enroll for the term the scholarship represents and must have a Free Application for Student Aid, or FAFSA, filed with the financial aid office no later than the deadline for the scholarship. One example of the scholarships available is the Parry Scholarship Fund, which is open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students at the College of Nursing. Applicants must be full-time students, have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and prove financial need. Online applications are available at the OU College of Nursing website.
- The State of Oklahoma sponsors the Physician Manpower Training Commission, or PMTC, Nursing Student Assistance Program. Students who wish to pursue an MSN, BSN, ADN or LPN and who are willing to practice in rural communities in the state of Oklahoma after certification may apply. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, an Oklahoma resident and admitted to an accredited nursing program. Students receive a loan of at least $500, which is forgiven at the rate of one year of aid for one year of work in an eligible Oklahoma location. In addition to the loan, applicants can receive as much as $2,500 in unmatched scholarships and might qualify for a matching scholarship up to the same amount. Applications are available from the PMTC.
- Current LPNs who wish to advance to an RN or those seeking to obtain an ADN or BSN for their first license might be eligible for a scholarship offered by St. John Health System. Recipients agree to work for St. John full-time for at least two years after licensing. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Interested parties should contact the Human Resources department at St. John to apply. Award amounts vary by the type of degree the applicant is seeking.
- Mercy is another hospital system that offers scholarships in exchange for a work commitment. Students attending Francis Tuttle Technology Center to become an advanced unlicensed assistant, or AUA, can receive up to $729 in exchange for a one-year work commitment. Students seeking an ADN or BSN are eligible for $4,000 to $8,000 in scholarship money for a commitment of one to two years. LPNs seeking to obtain their RNs can receive $4,000 for a one-year commitment as an RN. RNs advancing to BSNs can apply for up to $6,000 in exchange for a one-year work commitment. The program also makes awards for those seeking a master's degree that range from $5,000 to $10,000 for a one- to two-year commitment. Online applications are available at the Mercy website.
