How to Move on From Ending a Friendship

8
    • 1). Allow yourself time to grieve your friendship. You are likely going to feel anger and sadness. Share these feelings with friends, a loved one or a counselor.

    • 2). Write a goodbye letter to your friend, but don't send it. This is an effective way of releasing all of your anger and hurt feelings without making the situation worse. Write down all of the things that caused the friendship to break down. Remembering why the friendship didn't work may help with the mourning process.

    • 3). Put away all of the things that remind you of your former friend. Don't extend your pain by keeping up pictures and rekindling memories. Put these things in a box and put them somewhere out of sight.

    • 4). Take up a new hobby. Join a yoga or painting class -- something that will get your mind off of things and allow you to relieve stress. These are also great places to meet new friends.

    • 5). Surround yourself with a new social scene. Building new relationships will help you forget the old ones, and may help you remember why you ended the friendship to begin with.

    • 6). Avoid contact with the former friend. Try not to frequent places that you know the person goes to often. Any contact with the person can cause you more pain and stress.

    • 7). Accept that the friendship is over. Try to come to terms with your decision to end the friendship by reminding yourself why it didn't work.
