The phantom calls for Christine to be given the lead and when his demand is not fulfilled he manages in stealing Carlotta's voice and whisking Christine away to a mysterious lake that is beyond the theatre.
There he expresses his undying love for Christine but she reveals that she's already in love with Raoul who is the wealthy patron of Opera.
Meanwhile plots to capture the phantom are being devised.
The rest of the play revolves around the continuous battle that goes on between Raoul and the Phantom for the love interest of Christine.
In October 1986, the play made its Broadway premier at Her Majesty's Theatre in London.
The lead featured Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman.
Harold Prince and Cameron Mackintosh were the director and the producer respectively.
Since its inception it has had 16 productions, and has premiered in more than hundred cities in thirteen countries all over the world.
The Phantom of the Opera that premiered in the late eighties on Broadway repeated the same cast.
It made Webber the first ever composer who had three simultaneous musicals playing in London and also New York.
The show was an instant success and became the 3rd third longest-running show in the history of Broadway following the Misérables and the Cats.
