After-Procedures for Sclerotherapy
- If your leg was treated, immediately following your sclerotherapy treatment begin wearing medical compression stockings to support the treated veins. Bring the stockings with you if you plan to use ones you already own so that your doctor can check them to make sure they are still tight enough. Do not take anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin and ibuprofen, for the first 48 hours. Take Tylenol for any discomfort or pain. Avoid hot water and steam for the first two days after the procedure. This includes hot baths, hot compresses, whirlpools and saunas. Do not expose the treated area to direct sunlight. Wash the injection sites with lukewarm water and a gentle soap (see Reference 1).
- Walk regularly within the first week following your sclerotherapy treatment to keep blood moving through your veins. Treated areas will look bruised, and your plastic surgeon will usually remove your dressings after the first week. Your surgeon may recommend that you continue to wear compression stockings for several more weeks. Refrain from sitting or standing in one position for more than two hours at a time. Avoid running, squatting and heavy lifting for the first week (see Reference 3).
- Within the first month, you may be permitted to stop wearing your compression hose, though some sclerotherapy patients are advised to wear them for up to six weeks. Bruising will begin to fade during the weeks following the procedure, and you will notice that your treated veins appear lighter. Still, avoid sitting or standing for more than two hours without moving or changing position. After the first month, you should be able to resume your normal daily activities and exercise routine, but consult with your doctor before doing so, especially if you plan to do any running, jogging or weightlifting (see Reference 3).
- Most sclerotherapy patients require more than one treatment session to achieve their desired results. Follow-up treatments can begin as early as three weeks after the initial procedure. Your plastic surgeon will monitor your healing closely to determine when you are ready for an additional treatment session. According to topdocs.com, a cosmetic surgery site of board certified surgeons, 50 to 70 percent of treated veins will be gone permanently (see Reference 2).
