How to Plant Bleeding Heart Plants in Pots
- 1). Prepare the pots as soon as the frost threat is over in your region. Line16-inch pots with 1 inch of pea gravel. The pots should contain holes at the bottom for adequate drainage.
- 2). Fill the pots three-quarters full with organic potting soil. Use your hands to dig holes in the middle of each pot. The holes should equal the size of the bleeding hearts' root balls.
- 3). Remove the bleeding heart plants from their nursery containers and set one plant in each hole. Pat the soil around the main stem of each plant to remove air pockets.
- 4). Fill a watering can with lukewarm water and give each pot a deep watering. The water should flow through the soil and out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pots. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season with supplemental watering in lieu of rain.
- 5). Cover the top 1/4 inch of each pot with bark mulch. The mulch will serve a dual purpose as it improves moisture retention and protects the roots of the plants when the temperature drops. Set the pots in a site where they will remain partially shaded when finished mulching.
