What Blooms in September?

5

    Carnations

    • Carnations, also known as dianthus, are a family of flowering plants that bloom at various times during the year. Annual and perpetual-blooming carnations are often in bloom in September and are typically planted in the spring.

According to The Flower Expert website, carnations gets their name from the Greek word for "Flowers of the Gods". They come in a variety of sizes and colors that represent different meanings. Pink carnations, for example, represent a mother's love, while white carnations are meant to represent good luck. These flowers also bloom in various shades of red, green, purple, and yellow, and they can also bloom in striped varieties. They grow best with exposure to direct sunlight and should be kept moist.

    Chrysanthemums

    • Chrysanthemums, more commonly referred to as mums, are one of the easiest perennial flowers to grow, according to TheGardenHelper.com. There are hundreds of varieties of mums that grow well into the fall season and bloom in September and even later in some cases. It is wise to purchase early blooming versions of these flowers if the garden is in a cooler northern climate.

Chrysanthemums should be planted in full sunshine to produce the most blooms. They do not respond well to wet roots, so sandy soil and a deep planting hole is preferred for obtaining the best results for these plants.

    Orchids

    • Orchids are considered a tropical and exotic flower, but they are actually one of the most plentiful families of plants on earth, existing in nearly every climate across the globe. The orchid family consists of more than 25,000 species and 100,000 hybrids, according to Orchid-Care.org. The terrestrial versions of the orchid grow well in cooler climates, while the more common epiphytic orchids that grow with exposed root systems are often found in warmer climates or controlled climates. These beautiful flowers have seemingly endless colors and sizes and many of them bloom in the fall of the year, including September.
