College Grants for Cancer Survivors
- Grants from The Sam Fund for Young Adult Survivors of Cancer provide monies not only for college tuition and expenses, but other needs such as rent, treatment-related medical bills, health and automobile insurance, and transportation. Cancer survivors between the ages of 17 and 35 who are U.S. citizens and whose active treatment is complete may apply for grants. The fund's goal is to help young people move on to the next stage of their lives after cancer treatment.
- Young adult "cancer warriors" -- of which Ryan Mullaly was considered one -- may apply for scholarships from the nonprofit organization that bears his name. Ryan lost his battle, but never gave up the fight. While he could not attend college due to his illness, other young cancer survivors may do so with the award provided by the fund in the amount of $1,000, as of December 2010. Applicants must be U.S. residents under the age of 22 who were diagnosed with cancer between the age of 13 and the end of their high school years.
- The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation provides funding for the Komen College Scholarship program. Applicants must be breast cancer survivors under age 25 or those who lost a parent to the disease, who plan to attend a state school in their state of residence. Grants, which are renewable, may be awarded up to $5,000 per semester, as of December 2010. Eligible students must hold U.S. citizenship or have legal permanent-resident status.
- Nikki Leach's life was claimed by a brain tumor, but the foundation bearing her name provides grants to young cancer patients and survivors so they may live their lives as fully as possible. Cancer survivors aged 16 to 25 may apply for grants, which include college tuition. Funds may also be used to pay for clothes or special purchases, as well as "the opportunity to enjoy normal or unusual activities they might otherwise not be able to afford."
