How to Install Radiant Heating on Existing Concrete Floors
- 1). Level the existing concrete floor. Use a 2-by-4 piece of lumber that is very straight to move around the concrete floor. Look for any gaps that appear between the bottom of the lumber and the concrete. Mark a "L" everywhere the floor is low with a permanent marker.
- 2). Pour leveling compound onto the concrete floor in all the low areas. The mixture will cause the surrounding level of flooring to raise up to and level the concrete. Follow the instructions on the packaging of the leveling compound for the application. Allow the leveling compound to thoroughly dry.
- 3). Cut the warming floor mat to fit the area you want to heat. The mat is made of fiberglass mesh with a heating wire woven throughout it. Be very careful not to cut the wires of the floor mat.
- 4). Glue the mat into position with a hot melt glue gun. A few dabs of glue will hold the mat in place. You only need to keep it in position while you pour the self-leveling compound over the entire mat. Let the leveling compound dry.
- 5). Install the finish floor material of your choice over thin-set mortar.
- 6). Wire the heating mat into the electrical system of the house. Have a licensed electrician make the appropriate electrical connections.
