• Garnishment is the legal method of claiming income or money from a debtor through wage deduction and bank account seizure. Each state has specific procedures for checking account garnishment, but creditors must always obtain a judgment prior to garnishing money from a checking account. A judgment is a court order that allows creditors to pursue debt collection through liens, levies and seizures.
