What is Indeed.com?

Indeed.com is a job search engine. It is not a list of message boards, or a place where you can actually submit your resume. From the site FAQ page: "Indeed searches jobs listed on job boards, newspaper sites and niche sites. Indeed dynamically monitors job listings on these websites on a continuous basis, so in one simple search you can find the very latest jobs listed on every site."
I asked David Parmet, Indeed's Director of Communications, for some more information on what job boards, etc.

that they cover and he had this to say:

"The short answer is.. all of them. We cover all of the major job boards, newspaper classified sites, niche industry sites and corporate job sites. More than 1,500 in all. You can include Monster, HotJobs, Criag's List, Career Builder, etc. in that group."

Indeed Jobs Search Home Page

Indeed's home page could not be simpler. You've got a couple of choices available to you from the get-go in order to narrow down your job hunt: What (job title, keywords, or company name) and Where (city, state, and zip). I've been using Indeed for a while now, and I find that I get the best results by filling in both of these fields, rather than just choosing the mandatory "What" ("where" is optional).
You can also choose to search Indeed immediately for jobs in your state, but that probably will return a few too many results for you to deal with. Here's a sample search I just did: "systems" for What, and 97224 for "where".

Indeed Job Search Options

When I got my search results, the page gets a bit more busy.

On the far right are suggestions to refine my search, a welcome feature, since Indeed's suggestions were way better than what I came up with. In the middle of the screen are the actual job results, sorted by relevance. You can sort these by date as well by clicking on the text link at the top of your screen. To the far right are Sponsored Links. Just a quick note about your job search results and sponsored links: the jobs that will show up in your search results at Indeed are NOT paid placements. They're just ranked by relevance to your query or by date, whichever option you choose.
You have the option of saving your searches as Indeed Job Alerts. I've done this with a couple of my searches and it works well, only comes once a day. Indeed also keeps a record of your past searches in a column to the lefthand side, underneath the Search Suggestions.

My job search above returned a whopping 10,000-plus results. You have the option to refine your search with Indeed's Advanced Search Preferences, which narrows your search parameters by searching for all words, exact phrase, at least one word, words in the title, particular company, where and when, age of jobs, and how many should display on the page. If you already have a particular company that you're searching for, I would definitely suggest Indeed's Advanced Search options.

Indeed Job Search Special Features

I liked the Where are the Jobs? feature. This takes you to an interactive map of the United States that shows you exactly how many job postings might be in an area near you: "Job Postings Per Capita...For the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States.The bigger the dot, the more job postings per capita." You can zoom in and click on the particular area you would like to search.
Indeed also has a nifty set of Webmaster Tools, including:

• Jobroll:" a customized, dynamically-updating list of jobs that may be placed on your blog or website."
• Job Search Box: "may be placed on your website so your users may search Indeed directly from there."
• Indeed Web Services:"submit job searches and receive results via a structured XML feed which can be incorporated into your website or application."

Why Should I Use Indeed.com To Find a Job?

First of all, it's simple to use. I found more jobs in five minutes on here than I did searching on other job boards. You have to go to the individual websites in order to apply (which is kind of a pain) but this is a great way to generate job leads.
Second, you can subscribe to your job searches. I get one every day for a friend of mine, and it's been pretty productive thus far.

Lastly, it's a good vertical search engine with pretty good results, simple interface, and not a lot of extra gunk (college offers, magazine subscriptions, etc.) to gunk up your precious job-searching time.
