Elvis Presley Timeline: 1971

14
July 20: At tonight's Lake Tahoe opening, Elvis for the first time enters the stage to the strains of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra," in the version heard in the movie 2001.
August 9: Opening his new Vegas show, Elvis receives his first bad live notices since his comeback.
August 28: Elvis is awarded his first Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy.
September 6: Presley closes his Summer engagement in Vegas wearing, for the first time, a specially-designed cape.

September 23: As more reports swirl in the gossip columns about Priscilla's unhappiness with Elvis, several newspapers also report that Colonel Parker is also fed up with the singer and looking to end his contract (though this is probably a PR move by the Colonel, designed to get Elvis' attention).
November 5: Two firsts at tonight's show: comic Jackie Kahane begins his lifelong stint as opening act, and Elvis ends the show with cape outstretched in a bizarrely Christlike pose -- another gimmick that will become a staple of the live act.
November 6: For the first time, announcer Al Dvorin ends the show by announcing that "Elvis has left the building," an attempt to convince encore-hungry crowds to go home.
December 25: Elvis and Priscilla seem distant to friends and family at this year's Graceland Christmas celebration, where the King jokingly gives out McDonalds' new gift certificates as fake gifts.
December 31: Elvis announces to his entourage that Priscilla will be divorcing him, saying simply, "She says she doesn't love me anymore." In contrast to previous years, tonight's New Year's Eve celebration is held at Graceland rather than a local club.
