Would You Know If Your Dog Suffered From Allergies?

6
It's a statistical fact millions of people on a global basis suffer from allergies.
Allergic reactions can be caused by pretty much any everyday object from the clothing we wear to the food we eat even the air we breathe can cause issues dependent on the person and particular allergy.
Once we have identified an allergy we can take steps to reduce the attacks by eliminating the source to the best of our ability or using medications which are usually in tablet or nasal sprays.
In severe cases the medication would be stronger and likely prescribed by a medical practitioner.
Dogs are one of the most common family pets and are susceptible to many illnesses similar to ours allergies being one of these.
Would you know if you pet suffered from allergies? And if so how would you treat it? As with our own suffering we need to identify the source this will usually fall into one of five categories being, contact, inhalant, food, bacterial and the old favourite fleas.
If you have had the dog for years and the allergies are a new thing it should be easy enough to trace the source as it will usually be associated with a change in routine for example are you now walking the dog in a new place where its coming into contact with new vegetation and foliage? Have you changed his diet and the problem is in the makeup of the new food? These are the simple ones to spot however inhalant and bacterial are a little different and will usually require some sort of medication to control and eliminate the reactions similarly flea infestations will need a medicated shampoo.
Allergies if not identified and addressed can cause our dogs great suffering again very similar to ourselves, it is normally the case that once the source has been identified and eliminated the dog will return to good health in a few days.
Things to watch out for in identifying allergies would include constant itching and scratching which would include pawing at the eyes, possibly the development of dry skin or hot spots; this would be areas of inflamed skin.
In worst case scenarios if left untreated the dogs through repeated licking and chewing can start to self mutilate, which in itself can lead to further problems such as infection in the open wounds.
Allergies are relatively easy to treat we just need to look after our pets and be aware of any outward changes in their mannerisms and treat them accordingly.
