Things to Make a Basement Brighter Looking

6

    Lighting

    • Installing effective lighting fixtures is one of the most effective ways to brighten a basement. Avoid overloading the space with harsh fluorescent lighting, which can make the room seem cold and uncomfortable. Indirect light is often the best option for a basement, particularly if there are low ceilings, because it can diffuse the light over a larger area and open up the space to make the ceiling seem higher. Recessed lights are an effective complement to indirect lighting fixtures and can be scattered across the ceiling to provide light throughout the basement. Use floor and table lamps in seating or work areas to provide more focused lighting. For all of your basement lighting fixtures, opt for bulbs that provide a soft, warm glow that mimics natural light to give the room a cozy feel.

    Window Wells

    • Some basements are built so a portion of the space extends above ground. In this type of set-up, you can install additional windows or add larger ones to allow natural light into your basement. Even if your basement is fully underground, you can still bring natural light inside to brighten up the place by digging window wells. Windows wells create space for windows to be placed at ground level so some natural light can enter your basement. They can sometimes cause issues with leaks, so install waterproof covers to prevent possible damage.

    Paint

    • Painting the walls of your basement with a lighter shade can instantly brighten the space. Avoid a stark shade like white, though, because it may appear harsh. Instead, opt for softer, warmer colors such as yellow, peach or tan. Pale shades of blue and green are attractive options as well. When selecting a paint formula, go with a finish that has some sheen so the walls reflect light and further brighten the space. Semi-gloss paint is an ideal option because it is durable and easy to clean.

    Mirrors

    • Adding decorative mirrors to your basement walls is another simple and effective way to brighten the subterranean rooms. Mirrors help reflect the light you already have so it is more intense and makes the space feel larger. Place mirrors on opposite walls to increase the effect and widen a narrow area of the basement.
