    Tiles

    • Tiles are a well-used medium for baths and showers because they serve both functional and decorative purposes. Tile surfaces are generally quite easy to clean, durable and are water resistant. They also tend to add more of a decorative touch because they come in a variety of colors and materials to match your bathroom décor. Popular tile choices for showers include ceramic, marble and stone tiles. If you are planning to tile your floor, you can purchase tiles composed of small pre-attached squares for easy installation.

    Mortar

    • Mortar is an essential product when it comes to refinishing your shower or bathtub because it serves as the base to adhere the tiles. Thin set mortar is the best for tiling because it works with almost any fired clay ceramic tiles or stone tiles. When you apply the mortar, you should spread it evenly with a trowel before placing on the tiles. Don't spread out too large of an area or the mortar will dry before you can lay the tile. Mortar goes a long way; a 50 pound bag of thin set mortar will cover up to 100 square feet of tiles.

    Grout

    • Once the tiles have dried onto the grout for a period of 24 to 48 hours, you will need to apply grout in between the cracks of the tiles. There are many different colors of grout to choose from and the color you choose should complement your tile choice and the décor in your bathroom. There are three main types of grout: non-sanded, sanded and epoxy. Epoxy is the favored choice of grout for most projects because it is stain resistant, very resilient and is more waterproof than other types of grout. When the grout is applied between the tiles, any excess should be wiped off using a damp sponge.

    Grout Sealant

    • Grout sealant is another important product when refinishing your shower stall because it provides a moisture barrier and stops mildew from forming in between the tiles. When grout becomes stained with mildew or mold, it can be very difficult to clean. Grout sealant penetrates into the microscopic voids in the grout, completely sealing out moisture. Penetrating sealers are a popular choice for tiled showers and baths because they do not change the color of the grout. When applying the sealant, make sure you wipe off any excess from the surface of the tiles or it will be there for good.
