Tips For Selecting Baitrunner Reels

27
Baitrunner reels were developed by Shimano and is registered to them since 1987.
A few other manufactures such as Daiwa and Okuma also produce similar baitfishing type reels.
These types of reels were expensive when they were first introduced, however, the price has gone down over the years.
You can now buy a good quality bait fishing reel for under $50.
The baitrunner reels are used more today when fishing for carp, catfish and other types of fishing that require the rods to be placed on rod holders.
It has a unique two clutch feature that uses a drag system that lets the line run when the fish hits the bait and takes off swimming with it, the drag will then lock when you pull the rod to set the hook.
Your first clutch is set when you cast the bait out and rest or hold your rod.
When you have the position of your bait, then you can set the second clutch.
Both clutches are able to have the tension adjusted.
So if you are fishing in windy conditions or the water is moving you would want to increase the tension of the clutch.
In conditions that are still or less windy, the clutch tension will have to be on a lighter setting.
With the tension on the clutch set up right, a fish can take the bait, take off with your line and it would come from the spool without getting tangled or dragging your gear into the water and losing your rod and reel or the fish on the other end.
It is very easy to use the second clutch, all you have to do is pick up your rod and turn the handle of your baitrunner reel.
The turn of your reel handle will set the first clutch which is set to match the poundage of your fishing line.
Carp anglers prefer to use the baitrunner reels due to the drag system.
Bolt rigs and baitrunners go hand in hand for carp fishing.
The rigs are designed to scare the fish as it picks up the bait and feels resistance from the weight or a hook, which then causes it to bolt off and it hooks against the weight of the lead, is how it got its name bolt rig.
When using a bolt rig and not using a baitfishing reel, a huge fish can get away from you and easily pull your rod into the water.
The fish can then snap the fishing line and can result in lost of fish and rigs.
