Canon 24mm 1.4 Lens - A High-End Solution for Your Photography Needs?
In my search for a high-quality wide angle solution, I came across the Canon 24mm 1.4 Lens. Recently replacing the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM Lens, this new product from Canon combines a compact design with a professional, quality design that makes it as fun to hold as it makes it sturdy. The ultrasonic motor allows FTM focusing, which can be done in a quiet, quick manner. Intrigued by the initial quality and design of the lens, I decided to give the lens a more in-depth look to determine if it would be worth the investment. Here are the results of my investigation, covering the general product specifications, described claims made by the manufacturer and the benefits of using this particular lens.
Included on the Canon 24mm 1.4 Lens is a 13 elements/10 groups lens construction, an 84 degree diagonal angle of view and a rear focusing system with USM. Excluding the attachable hood, the dimensions are 3.4 x 3.4" and the weight is approximately 23 oz (1.45 pounds). The minimum focusing distance of three inches allows for super-close photography while the f/1.4 allows it to be the brightest and widest angle lens currently manufactured by Canon. Its weather-proof and dust-proof build allow it to be in the action without suffering the consequences, something that many other wide-angle lenses lack.
Some of the claims touted by Canon include the ability for this lens to minimize ghosting and flare, to reduce chromatic aberrations through the use of UD glass lens elements and an improved central processing unit that allows for an overall better auto-focusing system. While no observable difference could be made in regards to the auto-focusing time, the noise during focusing was barely noticeable and chromatic aberrations appeared to be non-existent after continued use of this lens. Flares and ghosting were also absent from my testing experience; not bad at all considering no major adjustments were done to achieve these results.
The Canon 24mm lens is a state-of-the-art product and is obviously best used for exaggerating the size and depth of object(s) in a photograph. If other wide angle lenses are being used but a vignette effect is occurring, this lens is perfect as it has a noticeably reduced effect on that issue. When photographing close-up portraits and landscape shots, the lens is at home and provides crisp, sharp focus and clarity in all photographs. All in all, the lens is absolutely fantastic for all situations where light is adequate or dim but should not be used where an intense amount of light is present.
This lens by Canon is best suited for professional use as it is a heavily-customizable product that requires experience to use properly. The expensive nature of the lens also ensures that only the most ardent photographers grab this off of the shelf but it is worth every penny. In terms of functionality and construction, this lens is the best wide-angle lens Canon has on the market today. For those expert photographers who need the absolute best when it comes to lens, the Canon 24mm 1.4 Lens delivers on all fronts.
