When Should the New Testament Passover be Observed - 14th or 15th?
Did Christ destroy the Old Testament instructions regarding the Passover? Did He nailed it to the stake? When did the early church of God observed this important Festival? Should the New Testament church observe Passover? What is the Biblical teaching on this matter? Jesus Christ established his Church almost two thousand years now.
He said and:teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Amen(Matthew 28:20, NKJV).
Part of that Gospel message is to keep the Passover, notice: Matthew 26:17 Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover? 18 And He said, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.
19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
Earlier, He said to his disciples that: Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Notice, NEVER did our Lord ever say that He "destroy" the law of God as it written in the Old Testament.
The prophets of Old taught it, and so was Jesus keeping his Father's commandments.
Then, why would our modern Christendom teach the CONTRARY to the way of truth, contrary to the Son of God? Answer? Paul said in Acts 20: 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of Godwhich He purchased with His own blood.
29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
Notice, during the early formation of Christianity, during the first century there alreadya "savage wolves"--false teachers will overtake some of God's elect, speaking perverse things(contrary to the Gospel).
Majority today did not heed Paul's warning! Majority today shun God's Passover! Contrary to the revealed truth, Christ says through Jude 1:4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord Godand our Lord Jesus Christ".
Notice, turning the "grace" of God into LEWDNESS -- means in NIV as "For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you.
They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
" Today, you will heard that God's Passover is not anymore our obligation, among other commandments.
They said also that we are in "grace", not anymore obligued to keep God's Passover, Sabbaths and other Laws in OLD Testament.
This EXACTLY Jude warned to be aware of! NEW TESTAMENT SUPPORTS OLD TESTAMENT The apostle Paul was taught by our Lord Jesus Christ: Galatians 1:11-12 But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.
12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but itcame through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Paul plainly said concerning Passover:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened.
For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
8 Therefore let us KEEP the feast...
" (I Corinthians 5:7-8).
These was very plain.
Why would so-called christians forget and completely overlook such an instruction? The answer is clear-- false teachers dominated the entire christendom.
Paul observe it as he said:1 Corinthians 11: 1" Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
" Obviously, Paul was saying that christians should follow him concerning Christ teaching, in this subject, keeping the Passover.
Jesus Christ observe the Passover since his childhood, and no way he forgot this Feast.
Notice:Luke 2:41 "His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.
42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast".
Christ was obedient to his parents and followed them since childhood.
Twelve years is the right time to expose them to the temple and learn.
OLD TESTAMENT PASSOVER What day the Passover should be observe? Since Christ and the apostles did not "destroy" the Passover commandments as written in the holy prophets words(the Old Testament), what is the exact instruction concerning this good Festival.
In Exodus 12, the prophet Moses wrote: "1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.
4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each mans need you shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year.
You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month.
The meat was eaten : then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs "(verse 8).
This month is in the time of vernal equinox, the beginning of Spring.
The new crescent moon marks its first day of the month of the year.
The 14th day from the first day is Nisan 14, were all Passover lambs were killed during the "evening".
The Hebrew here is "Ben H' erebim" which means: 6.
keep it up until the fourteenth day, &c.
--Being selected from the rest of the flock, it was to be separated four days before sacrifice; and for the same length of time was Christ under examination and His spotless innocence declared before the world.
kill it in the evening--that is, the interval between the sun's beginning to decline, and sunset, corresponding to our three o'clock in the afternoon.
--Jamieson, Fausset and Brown commentary.
Christ died exactly three o'clock in the afternoon, since he was the lamb of God sacrificed for us said Paul.
The Passover meal was eaten at the beginning of the 15th(Ending of the 14th).
WITH unleavened bread.
Unleavened bread was first eaten on the BEGINNING of the 15th, because the days of this bread was first observe on the 15th up to the 21st(SEVEN days).
Exodus 12:15 b says:"...
For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel..
" Christ have no time to KEEP the Passover since he was died on 14th day.
But Christ keep and introduced the Lord's Supper earlier (at the beginning of the 14th).
He introduced the new covenant or his last testament on this date.
In I Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood.
This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death till He comes.
" So very plainly, Christ did not destroy the Old Testament Passover, because he died EXACTLY on the 14th day.
The Lord's supper was NOT the Passover, but coincided with the Jewish regular meal--the kiddush meal.
Unleavened bread was taken out of the houses before the 14th ends, so that on the 15th no leavening at home.
During Christ last supper, the leavened bread was allowed but must be out at the end of the 14th.
So, there is no reason to say that Christ "destroy" the Old Testament Passover.
You as a Christian must observe it, also the Last supper.
These two observances was different to each other.
But today, some would say to you that Both passover and Lord's supper was observed the SAME dates.
What an error.
He said and:teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Amen(Matthew 28:20, NKJV).
