What You Need for a Hydroponic Setup
- Hydroponic systems provide support for the plant and deliver nutrient solution and oxygen to the roots. Hydroponic systems vary from simple, DIY setups like ebb-and-flow tables or aeration systems to more costly and elaborate aeroponic systems. You can construct a simple aeration system with a plastic tub, mesh tray and aquarium air pump.
- Without soil, your plants have no way of obtaining the nutrients they need to grow. The nutrient solution provides all major and trace nutrients plants need. According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension website, success or failure in hydroponics usually depends most on the quality of your nutrient solution. Use solutions specifically formulated for hydroponic setups. Garden fertilizers don't contain all the nutrients plants need and won't work in hydroponic systems.
- Some systems require you to provide a sterile, soilless growing medium to support plant roots. Sand, gravel, perlite, vermiculite and rock wool all make effective hydroponic growing mediums.
