How to Hunt in South Africa
- 1). Contact several South African hunting safari operators. For comprehensive listings of certified guides contact the South African Tourism Board at Southafrica.net. Use certified guides and ask for references from previous clients before booking the trip.
- 2). Talk with the safari operator regarding what animals you wish to hunt, costs, rates of success for hunts, what is provided for the trip and inquire on added fees for taxidermy and shipping of animal hides, racks or heads. Determine the meeting city. Johannesburg is known for difficult firearm import customs hassles. Ask the guide if they have rifles for hire.
- 3). Fill out the South Africa Police Service form SAPS 520 for the import of firearms for the trip available at Africanskyhunting.co.za and have it prepared and ready for customs if deciding to use your own firearms.
- 4). Go to your doctor for a checkup before the trip. Ask for any needed shots for your region of travel, typically a gamma-globulin shot, and ask about anti-malarial prescriptions. Follow the directions for before, during and after trip taking of the medications.
- 5). Bring long sleeved light-weight shirts and pants, stout desert hiking boots, sunscreen without scent, hat and synthetic or wool socks. Use the guide's anti-pest bug sprays as they are proprietary for the region.
- 6). Study any available literature regarding your hunt. For example, if you plan to hunt buffalo, learn the subtle nuances of the hunt and learn the basic tracking procedures for the animal. Having prior knowledge aids in the enjoyment and success of the hunt.
