How to Attach a Discone Antenna to a Mast
- 1). Erect a sturdy ladder that can handle your personal body weight and reach the top of your antenna mast. Have your partner hold the ladder while you are ascending and descending if necessary to keep the ladder stable.
- 2). Tie one end of a long piece of rope loosely to the supporting structures of your discone antenna, making sure the rope doesn't get tangled in the thin wire elements that point downward (the elements that create the cone appearance). Tie the other end of the rope to your wrist or arm so it goes up the ladder with you while keeping your hands free for the climb.
- 3). Climb to the top of the antenna mast and slowly pull the discone antenna up to your location. Remove the rope and use an open-ended wrench to loosen the nuts on the "U" bolts that are connected to the mount of the discone antenna. Loosen the nuts just far enough that you can slide the "U" bolts around the top of the mast. Slide the antenna onto the mast, leaving about 2 or 3 inches of the mast above the top "U" bolt.
- 4). Tighten the "U" bolt nuts until the antenna is mounted firmly onto the top of the mast. Drop one end of the rope down to your partner and have him tie it onto the coaxial cable line. Pull the coaxial cable line to the top of the ladder and screw the coaxial connector into the antenna until it's tight. Cover the entire connection with weatherproofing putty to keep out dirt and moisture.
