    • 1). Wait until you reach the age of majority in your state. In most states, a child becomes an adult and assumes adult responsibilities at the age of 18. These include the ability to enter binding contracts, vote and make a will. However, you cannot consume alcoholic beverages until you reach the age of 21.

    • 2). Obtain your parents permission. In some states, like Louisiana, parents can declare a child an adult without having to obtain a court order. This is only applicable for children who are not disabled.

    • 3). Get married. Individuals under 18 years old are considered adults when they marry. This is possible when the individual satisfies state requirements, which usually involves obtaining parental permission.

    • 4). Join the armed forces. Teenagers in the military are considered adults. You can become a member of the military after you obtain a high school diploma or GED.
