Test #1: Reaction to Surprise Stand at one side of the pup about six feet from him.
Take that umbrella you carried in and open it.
Place it on the floor.
Don't approach the dog or wave it at him, just let the umbrella sit on the floor.
The pup gets a low score if he runs from it frightened.
Similarly he scores low if he appears "frozen" and stiff.
You really don't want him growling, barking or attacking the umbrella either.
This gets him a low score as well.
The pup receives a moderate score if he acts startled initially, but recovers within 20 seconds.
You can give him a moderate score if he shows an interest in it and approaches it cautiously.
Give the puppy a high score if he is startled at first, but recovers within 10 seconds.
Also, the puppy scores high if he shows interest in it and approaches it without fear! Test #2: Trainability For this test, you'll need those food treats you brought.
Hold them.
Give several to the puppy.
Then, show him a treat and hold it slightly over his head, as if you wanted him to do the "begging" stance.
Then show him a treat and with your hand on the floor, keep it in your fingers.
The pup who ignores the food treat or doesn't follow the movement of the treats with his eyes scores low.
He also scores low if instead of moving towards you, he actually moves away from you.
The pup who shows an interest, but quickly loses interest as well, gets a moderate score.
Give any pup a moderate score who cautiously moves towards the treat, but becomes distracted by something else.
If he nips, jumps or scratches at your hand, the pup also will get a moderate score.
To achieve a high score on this test, the pup should quickly and enthusiastically approach the treats, follow the treats with both his eyes and body as you move it about and focus on your hand while you're holding the treats.
