Mike Myers Overview

Though he'll probably best be remembered for his iconic characters Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers and as the voice of an animated green ogre, Canadian-born Mike Myers has been performing since he was practically a baby. A character comedian who disappears inside his creations the way Peter Sellers once did (who Myers has named as a major influence), Myers is a comedy chameleon.

When his efforts are successful, we get Austin Powers. When they aren't we get The Love Guru.

Quick Mike Myers Facts

  • He began performing in commercials at age 2.
  • In 1986 he began performing improv comedy with Second City.
  • Two years later he moved from Toronto to Chicago, where he began performing with ImprovOlympic.
  • He joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1989 and remained there for six seasons before leaving in 1995 to pursue a film career.

Mike Myers at Saturday Night Live

After making his bones in sketch and improv at both Second City and ImprovOlympic, Mike Myers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1989, first as a featured player and, by the end of the season, as a full cast member. Both David Spade and Rob Schneider first joined the cast the same season. Myers immediately became a breakout star on the show thanks to his deep bench of popular characters including metalhead Wayne Campbell -- a character he had originated on Canadian television in 1986 and which was later adapted into the feature film Wayne's World and its sequel -- as well as Dieter, host of the German TV series Sprockets; Linda Richman, host of Coffee Talk; little Simon (who likes to make drawings) and Lothar of the Hill People.

Myers left the show in 1995.
