Instructions For a Daiwa Silvercast 208RL

    • 1). Spool the line into the reel by removing the housing (turn it 1/2 turn counterclockwise and pull it off) to expose the spool. Tie two full loops of the fishing line over the spool and turn the handle clockwise to transfer the line off the bobbin and onto the reel's spool. Try using 8 pound test to start. Run the end of the line through the end hole on the housing, slide the housing back onto the reel and turn 1/2 turn clockwise.

    • 2). Run the line through each of the metal loops on the rod. Tie a hook or lure to the end of the line using a Palomar knot (see Resources).

    • 3). Bring the reel and rod up and over your shoulder, holding the rod in your dominant hand. Press the "Cast" button in the upper-center of the reel with your thumb. Quickly flip the rod down in front of your chest, letting the hook or lure sail out to the water.

    • 4). Turn the handle clockwise once the hook or lure hits the water. This disengages the "Cast" button and allows for retrieval, which is done by turning the handle clockwise, bringing the line back into the reel.

    • 5). Pull up firmly when a fish strikes the hook or lure. This sets the hook into the fish's mouth. Adjust the "Drag" lever by pushing it forward to add tension to the line during the fight. As the fish tires, bring the drag back to the starting point by pushing backwards on the lever. Continue to turn the handle clockwise.
