How to Use an Insulin Pen for Injection

14
    • 1). Remove the cap and inspect the medication. The cap is there for protection and sterility of the needle. If medication looks discolored or the dose is not accurate, dispose of the pen.

    • 2). Clean the injection site. Alcohol is normally used, but some insulin pen manufacturers supply the patient with antimicrobial swabs.

    • 3). Attach the needle. For safety, the needle is packaged separately from the pen applicator. Attach the needle with the cap on, and remove the cap once the needle is firmly in place.

    • 4). Set the dose and inject the pen. The insulin pen gives you a dial with dosage information located on the applicator. Once the correct amount is chosen, insert the pen into a fleshy part of the skin.

    • 5). Dispose of the needle. Secure the pen within the safety cap and dispose it. If the pen is reusable, place the cap on the pen and store it in a dry, safe area.
