Home Insurance In San Diego And Finding Ways To Save

38
Like the rest of coastal California, home insurance in San Diego can seem dauntingly high.
Most people, however, don't bother to find ways to cut their homeowner insurance costs.
Here are some tips.
The fact is, people spend more effort trying to save on a shopping trip to the grocery store than they do on their home insurance.
It takes very little time to do something that could save you hundreds of dollars a year: Comparison shop.
Homeowner insurance rates in California vary from one company to the next depending upon several rating factors.
The Insurance Information Institute recommends that you get at least three quotes from different insurers to compare against.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to go online to an insurance comparison Web site.
These sites do not represent a single company.
Instead, you complete an online form and submit it once.
You'll then receive several quotes back from different agents or companies in your area.
You can also call agents in your neighborhood or visit individual company Web sites and request quotes from each.
The California Department of Insurance's Web site lists insurance companies that do business in the state.
Just make sure you provide the same information about the amount of coverages and deductibles to each, so you get an accurate comparison.
Speaking of coverages and deductibles, this is another area where many people do not realize they can lower their costs.
For example, if you bought your home for $550,000 it doesn't mean you need that much insurance coverage.
You only need to insure the home itself (and outlying structures such as sheds), not the land it's sitting on.
The other thing to remember is that the lower your deductible is, the higher your premium will be.
So you should consider if you could handle a higher deductible -- this could save you a lot.
You can also do things to your home that might earn you a discount on your insurance, such as adding a hard-wired fire alarm system, upgrading your electrical and plumbing and replacing or repairing your roof.
