The Van Gogh Museum

5
Although Amsterdam's world famous Van Gogh Museum is devoted to the life and work of the most famous Dutch impressionist artist and features the most extensive collection of his works anywhere in the world, it also showcases the work of Vincent's contemporaries and perhaps it is this aspect that makes the visit to the museum such a distinctive and personally touching experience.
Monet, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Breton are all represented, and displayed in a way which shows the development of the artists in their chosen fields, illustrating just how they diverted from their styles.
It also reveals how van Gogh himself gradually left the field of contemporaries to create a style uniquely his own.
The museum is open from every day except Sunday between 10am and 6pm but on Friday it stays open until 10pm.
You'll probably need all that extra time, since there's a lot about the artist to take in, so a multi-day stay at one of the nearby hotels in Amsterdam that cater to international tourists -- and several visits to the gallery -- are highly recommended.
Look for Amsterdam hotels in the "Oud Zuid.
" neighbourhood which surrounds the museum and is home to many other cultural institutions.
Not only is the Rijksmuseum within a stone throw's distance from the Van Gogh, but it also provides a springboard to the culinary delights the city has to offer.
Adventurous tourists on holiday might even approach one of the hotels in Amsterdam with excellent restaurant service and ask to have a picnic lunch packed.
The nearby Vondelpark, which was laid out in the style of a idealised English country garden, provides the perfect setting for a picnic for two -- or more -- especially sitting on the banks of its gorgeous pond.
There is little doubt that a visit to the Van Gogh Museum is only the beginning of an eventful and adventurous Amsterdam holiday.
Why not stay a while and explore the city, its sights and sounds, and most certainly also its many cafes, restaurants, and one of a kind landscapes that offer an atmosphere you cannot find outside the Netherlands.
