How to Put Line on a Fishing Pole

21

    Getting Started

    • 1). Purchase the relevant fishing gear. Visit any well-equipped, fishing tackle store and purchase a suitable fishing pole with a "spinning" reel to match. If you are a first-timer to fishing, tell the salesman.
Select a fishing pole that has the line strength specified, as well as a suitable spinning reel. Purchase a spool of fishing line that matches the fishing pole's recommended line strength and the spinning reel.

    • 2). Attach the spinning reel to your fishing pole. Mount the reel between the two metal clamps pre-fitted just above the handle (grip) of the fishing pole. The position of the reel should be such that it hangs below the pole and is aligned to the metal (line) eyelets that are pre-fitted to the pole. These clamps are meant for holding the reel in place. Make sure the reel has been firmly secured.

    • 3). Open the spool of fishing line. Hold the free end of the line and lift the bail to the "up" position. The bail is the small metal (wire) arm of the spinning reel that can be flipped up to open, and down to close.

    • 4). Start fixing the line to the spinning reel. With the bail still in open position, start by wrapping the line around the shaft of the reel a few times, and then around itself at least 5 to 6 times. After doing this, pass the free end of the line through the small opening formed at the top of the twisted (wrapped around) end nearest to the shaft.
Then hold the free end of the line in one hand, and the line running toward the spool in the other. Now pull both in opposite directions so that a tight knot is formed.

    • 5). Turn the winding handle fitted to the spinning reel to wrap the line around the reel's shaft. Use the index finger and thumb of one hand to hold the line lightly. Turn the winding handle with the other hand to wrap the line remaining in the spool around the spinning reel's shaft. You may wrap as much length of line as you need. In case you do not need a full spool, you may cut the line to the length desired.

    • 6). Take the free (cut) end of the line, and pass it through the metal eyelets (line guides) fitted on your fishing pole. Start threading the eyelet closest to the reel working your way to the last eyelet at the tip of the fishing pole. Once this is done, make sure to close the bail so that the line is kept tightly in place and will not unwind.

    • 7). Tie the free end of the line with hooks, weights, floats and other essential items required for fishing. Add bait to the hook ... and you should be ready to cast your line and start fishing.
