How to Write a Banking Check

37
    • 1). Write the date on the "Date" line in the upper right corner of the check. Record the month, day and year.

    • 2). Write the name of the person or company receiving the payment on the "Pay to the Order of" line.

    • 3). Write the dollar amount of the payment in the box to the left of the "Pay to the Order of" line. Record the amount in dollars and cents. For example, if the payment is for $25, write $25.00.

    • 4). Spell out the dollar amount on the line below "Pay to the Order of." Write the amount of cents as a fraction over 100, even if the payment is for an even dollar amount. For example, if the payment is for $25.00, write "Twenty-five dollars and 00/100". If the payment is for $101.32, write "One hundred dollars and 32/100."

    • 5). Describe the type of payment in the "Memo" line in the bottom left corner. If your payment is for a bill that you have an account number for, write your account number in the memo line. This helps the company you post your payment to your account.

    • 6). Sign the check in the bottom right corner. If you are the only person who owns the bank account that the checks are from, you are the only person who may sign the check. If you share a joint account with another person, you or the other person may sign. In this scenario, only one person must sign the check; both signatures are not necessary.
