The Internal Revenue Service tracks address changes through the post office; address changes can also be made using a form available online from the IRS. While there are no specific requirements regarding changes in address for federal tax purposes, there are several steps which will help ease the transition and eliminate any undue consequences come tax time. - Any time a taxpayer moves, he should file Form 8822 with the IRS. The form can be used by both individuals and businesses. The taxpayer must put his old and new address on the form. The taxpayer can also use other methods for change of address, such as written notification to the IRS or changing the address on his annual tax form.
- When changing addresses, the taxpayer should notify any of her employers for the past year. This allows the employer to send the taxpayer her W-2 form at the new address.
- The taxpayer should file a change of address form with his local post office. The post office will then forward any forms, required information and payments to the taxpayer's new address.
