Under Ohio law, a grandparent may lose their visitation rights to their grandchild if the biological parents of the child divorce. For example, if the grandparent's biological child passes away and the former spouse remarries and allows their new spouse to adopt the child, the grandparent's visitation rights cannot be terminated.

Grandparents in Ohio have the right to adopt their grandchild if a court of law determines it is in the best interest of the child. For example, if the child's birth parents are abusive and a court of law strips them of their parental rights, the grandparent might be awarded legal custody of the child. Under these circumstances, the grandparent would have the legal right to raise the child until the child becomes an adult.
