How to Write a Transcript for a TV Show

74
    • 1). Obtain an unedited copy of the TV show for which you want to create a transcript. Record a broadcast at home using a DVR or request a DVD from the station where the show originated. Alternatively, you may be able to find the show archived at the station or network's website.

    • 2). Open word-processing software on your computer. Position yourself close to the television so you can hear the show clearly or, if viewing the program on your computer, narrow both your word-processing and viewer windows so both are visible on screen.

    • 3). Determine the formatting you will use for your transcript. Generally, the name of each speaker will precede his line, written in either bold type or all capital letters. A colon separates the speaker's name and his comments. Use dashes, ellipses or parenthetical notations to handle interruptions by other speakers.

    • 4). Decide how you will format and describe scene changes, physical gestures and visual props. Note when speakers are addressing someone directly, when the audience interjects with applause or negative reaction, or when a video clip is introduced as part of the discussion. Usually, these nonverbal or additional details are included in parentheses. For example, a public affairs show may illustrate a protest with video of an event; you can note the inclusion in your transcript as follows:

      MODERATOR: Let's show the tape.
      (Videotape begins showing group demonstrating)
PROTESTERS (chanting): We won't go! We won't go!
      (Videotape ends; audience applauds)
MODERATOR (turning toward Senator Smith): Senator, do you agree with public opinion on this issue?
SEN. SMITH: My constituents consider all points of view of a given subject and make their choices accordingly.

    • 5). Start the show and listen carefully to the first sentence. Pause the recording and type the sentence. Play small segments, only one or two sentences at a time, so you can type each line correctly. As you get comfortable with the rhythm of the conversation, you may be able to type as the program is playing.

    • 6). Confirm your transcript by replaying the program in its entirety and following along with your written work. Pause the show as necessary to make changes to your transcript, confirming it is accurate and thorough.
