    • 1). Open Paint.NET. Double-click on the desktop icon or select the program from your Programs menu. If you don't have Paint.NET, download it from the Paint.NET download website (see Resources).

    • 2). Grab a photo to edit. Go to "File" on the menu toolbar and select "Open..." (Ctrl+O). In the Open window, select the location of the image file containing the photo that you need to correct. Select the file and then click the "Open" button.

    • 3). Enlarge the image to reveal a closeup of the red eye. Click the zoom-in tool icon (magnifying glass with + sign inside of it) on the tool bar at the top of the screen to enlarge.

    • 4). Choose the Rectangle Select tool. Press the "S" key on your keyboard, click the "Rectangle Select" icon on the Tools sidebar window or go to "Tool: " on the menu toolbar, click the down arrow and click on "Rectangle Select."

    • 5). Draw a square around the iris of the left eye.

    • 6). Go to "Effects" > "Photo" > "Red Eye Removal . . ." to open the Red Eye Removal window.

    • 7). Adjust the Tolerance and Saturation percentage as desired to match the correct color of the person's eye (or as close as possible) and then click the "OK" button. Repeat with the right eye.

    • 8). Save your work. Go to "File" > "Save" (Ctrl+S) or choose the "Save As" (Ctrl+Shift+S) option, select a location to save the file, name the file and then click the "Save" button.
