How to Use Zoom Lens On a Nikon N80 Camera

    • 1). Choose a lens. Nikon Nikkor zoom lenses are designed specifically to work with your Nikon N80. Other lenses will work, but for absolutely clear shots that you know will work every time, Nikkor lenses are recommended.

Nikkor zoom lenses range from telephoto to wide range. When most people think of zoom lenses, they think of telephoto lenses, which essentially bring in the picture from far away. A good, basic Nikon Nikkor zoom lens for the Nikon N80 is the 18-200 VR. The numbers signify the length of the lens, and the larger the last number is, the more "zoom power" you'll have. It may be tempting to run out and by a high-powered lens, but keep in mind that high-powered lenses are also high in cost and in many cases have limited use. Most pictures are taken either close-up or at mid-range, so a multiuse zoom lens that allows you to take mid-range pictures is ideal. Consider how you plan to use the lens before investing a lot of money.

    • 2). Attach the lens. Remove the existing lens from your Nikon N80 by pressing the small unmarked black button the left side of the lens and gently turning the lens clockwise. It should easily disconnect from the camera. Look on the bottom of the zoom lens for a small white dot. Line that white dot up with the white dot on the body of the camera near where the lens attaches. Gently place the lens into the the body of the camera, with the dots lined up, and turn it counterclockwise until you hear a click. Do not force the lens. If it doesn't seem to be catching, or won't turn, lift it straight up and away from the camera body and try again.

    • 3). Find and take your shot. Grasping the middle, ridged part of the zoom lens, turn it clockwise to zoom in, and counterclockwise to zoom out. Looking through the viewfinder, zoom in and out until you have framed the shot you want. Press the shutter release partway down to focus the shot, or manually focus if you prefer, and then take extra care to make sure your body is in proper position to take the shot. Unlike shorter distance lenses, every jiggle and movement will show up in a shot taken with a zoom lens. Make sure your elbows are in at your side, and that you take a deep breath and hold it as you release the shutter.

    • 4). Practice with a tripod. Because movement by the photographer shows up so much in shots using zoom lenses, spend some time practicing shots with a tripod. If you choose a high-powered zoom lens, a tripod may be a requirement to get clear shots. Attach your camera to the tripod, making sure it is secure, especially with the extra weight of the zoom lens. Find your shot and either press the shutter release button on the camera or use a remote shutter release to take the picture.
