How to Make a Jump Rings Tool
- 1). Insert the metal pipe into the vise and tighten the vise. Be sure that at least half the length of the pipe (about 1 inch) extends beyond the jaws of the vise. The vise holds the pipe steady so that you can use both hands to guide and control the dremel later.
- 2). Measure 1/2 inch from the end of the pipe and use the pen to mark the pipe. Your finished product will consist of this 1/2 inch section of pipe.
- 3). Use the dremel to cut on your mark, producing a 1/2 inch wide ring of pipe. Be sure to position the dremel blade so that it is perpendicular to the pipe length and move it downward in a smooth, steady motion. This step produces a ring of pipe the right size for a jump ring tool.
- 4). Insert the cut ring of pipe into the vise so that the top curvature is exposed, and tighten the vise. This positions the ring of pipe so that it is ready to receive the last dremel cut.
- 5). Use the dremel to cut a slit in the curved surface of the pipe ring, half-way between the edges. Make this cut parallel to the other cut you made. This cut forms the working part of the jump ring tool. To test your tool, slide the jump ring into the slit to check for length and width. Increase the width of the slit as needed until it slightly exceeds the gauge of the jump ring.
- 6). Use the sanding attachment to the dremel to buff the cut edges of the pipe so that the jump ring tool can slide on and off your finger without causing abrasions of discomfort. Continue sanding until all edges are smooth and no sharp edges or burrs remain. A jump ring tool fits onto your finger like a ring.
