Going through a stem cell transplant can be a traumatic event, as the procedure can require a long hospitalization. More commonly known as a bone marrow transplant, this procedure is used in the treatment of illnesses such as leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and aplastic anemia. During the recovery phase, encouragement from friends and family can mean a great deal to a patient. Sending a stem cell transplant patient a care package serves to brighten her day.

    Entertainment Care Package

    • If you are familiar with the patient's taste in music, movies and books, send a care package that focuses on these items. Long hospital stays can be boring, so these gifts provide small ways for the patient to occupy his time. Even if he can't watch DVDs in the hospital, he can enjoy them while he's still recovering at home. When opting to send DVDs, go for a whole season of a television show instead of just movies. Watching a season takes much more time than one or two movies. If he is too tired to read, many books come in CD form. A patient can close his eyes and simply listen to the stories.

    Child's Care Package

    • Having a child who must undergo such a serious medical procedure can strain a family. You can ease some of that strain by sending a child things that occupy her time so that Mom or Dad can relax a bit with a book or a solitary cup of coffee. Include fun items, such as children's books or magazines, puzzles and games she play alone or with someone else. Also include comfort items such as a stuffed toy or a cozy pair of pajamas. Tuck in a small gift for Mom and Dad to let them know you're thinking of them.

    Comfort Care Package

    • The hospital environment is not a very comfortable one, especially when someone must stay there for long time. Room temperatures and humidity can't be controlled. Send lotions, chap stick, a warm bathrobe, mouth wash, a neck pillow and comfortable slippers. If you have crafting or sewing abilities, consider making something he can wear. A handmade throw can add color to his environment and feel good on his legs when he's feeling isolated or depressed.
