Kimberly"s Southern-Style Sweet Iced Tea
This is absolutely delicious and my favorite summer drink.
I call it southern-style sweet tea because southerners make wonderful sweet tea, and love it so much.
However, my mother has been making wonderful sweet iced tea since I was little, and she is certainly not a southerner! My Story: When I was little, I had an English nanny straight from England.
The first time she offered to make my mother a cup of tea, at our house, she noticed that my mother didn't have PG Tips tea.
This is a British favorite and is imported from England, but is available at our grocery stores in Canada (especially A&P).
She made quite a fuss about us not having the right kind of teabags, and said that we've never had a great cup of tea until we had PG Tips.
Well, what followed was that she threw out all of our other brands of plain tea.
When she came over the next day, she stocked us up with PG Tips.
We've been believers ever since, and we always make sure we are stocked up to this day.
***As you will see in the ingredients chart, I recommend using PG Tips for iced tea.
Type: Beverage Serve With: You can make an alcoholic version of this drink by adding 1 shot of your favorite liquor to a 16 oz highball.
Prep Time: 10 min Brew Time: 5 min Yield: 16 cups Ingredients: 4 tea bags - My absolute favorite and the only kind I will use is PG Tips brand.
~16 cups water - ~10 cups of it boiled.
1 lemon - Freshly squeezed 1 orange - Freshly squeezed 2 cups sugar Instructions: 1.
Boil ~ 10 cups water in a pot, or as much as you can fill your kettle with.
2.
Using a natural vegetable/fruit spray cleaner, spray lemon and oranges, and rinse under cool water.
3.
In large pitcher (one that is able to hold at least 16 cups of liquid), combine sugar, 4 tea bags, and juice of the lemon and oranges, and the empty halves of the lemon & orange.
4.
Once water has boiled, pour into pitcher and stir to dissolve sugar.
Only leave tea bags and citrus halves in for 5 min maximum.
5.
Remove tea bags & citrus halves and discard, or use for compost.
6.
Fill pitcher to top with ~ 6 more cups of cool water.
* Tip: To cool tea quicker, use ice cubes in place of cool water.
7.
Serve & Enjoy in an frosty glass.
Nutrition Facts: It is best to use organic citrus.
Organic teas area also available.
Experiment with different types of tea, but always follow instructions for that particular type of tea for length of steeping time.
I have used other fruit, herbal teas, green teas, and interesting spices and herbs in our iced tea.
If you come to our house, you can pretty much guarantee that you'll find a tall, cold pitcher of iced tea in the fridge.
I hope this recipe becomes one of your family favorites! Eat deliciously!
