5 Tips for a Younger, Healthier Smile

As humans, we get older and our bodies start to show the age as time goes on. However, there are certain signs that your body gives off that you are aging and one of those things is your smile. Your smile is important; it shows your mood, it makes a first impression before you even say a word, and so much more. There are certain things you can do to help your mouth stay in tip-top shape and look good.

So what can you do to keep your smile looking great and bright?

1. Toss the toothbrush. This is actually a bigger deal for your oral hygiene than many people know. Why is it important to replace your toothbrush and when? Every few months, you should replace your toothbrush or the head (if electric) because of the wear and tear that happens on toothbrushes. The more you use your toothbrush, the duller the bristles get. Also, there is the bacteria aspect; you should replace your brush after getting the flu or cold because the bacteria could still be on your brush.

2. Chow down on the detergent foods. There are some foods that help keep your teeth clean because of their ability to scrape away the plaque. Popcorn, raw carrots, celery, and apples are regarded as the best “detergent foods”. While eating these foods can help keep your teeth clean, they will not replace good brushing.

3. Brush your teeth with baking soda about once a week. Baking soda will help bust out the stains in your teeth and help make them whiter. All you have to do for this is use it like you would use normal toothpaste.

4. Consider using mouthwash. Mouthwash is an important part of your oral hygiene routine as it is able to sweep between your teeth and neutralize bacteria. If you do not already have a good mouthwash, go shopping for some; consider buying alcohol-free mouthwash since the alcohol in washes can be uncomfortable for some and also can dry out the gums (dry gums create a nice environment for gums).

5. Brush as soon as you get out of bed and right before going to bed (with flossing and rinsing). You want to brush your teeth right before going to bed so there is no bacteria in your mouth while you sleep because there is not much saliva production to neutralize it overnight. You want to brush in the AM so you can sweep any away that built up overnight. Flossing and rinsing with mouthwash is a big help to accomplish these.
