How to Construct a Vermicompost

7
    • 1). Turn the plastic foam cooler upside down and poke five to 10 holes in the bottom of it using an ice pick. Widen the holes until they are approximately the size of a pencil. Create another five to six holes on either side of the cooler.

    • 2). Tear newspaper into 2-inch wide strips and spray them with water from a spray bottle to dampen them. Place the newspaper strips into the bottom of the plastic foam cooler until the cooler is three-quarters full.

    • 3). Place 1 lb. of Red Wiggler worms on top of the newspaper shreds. You can order Red Wigglers online or visit your local bait shop.

    • 4). Place 1 to 2 cups of sandy soil on top of the newspaper layer. If the worms come packed in dirt, just dump all of the dirt into the cooler.

    • 5). Place two bricks, or pieces of wood, in the location where you want to store the vermicomposter and set the cooler on top of it. Place the lid on top of the cooler. If the vermicomposter will be located inside, set it on top of a shallow tray to catch water that drips from the bottom.
