Flop show in Doaba, Punjab Congress wins only 4 seats

KAPURTHALA: It was 2007 revisited in Doaba region of Punjab as the Congress once again suffered a big jolt in the Assembly elections here, losing 17 out of 23 seats to the ruling SAD-BJP alliance. Doaba had been a Congress stronghold till 2002 elections.
All Congress heavyweights, including Avtar Henry, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Amarjit Singh Samra, Santokh Singh Chaudhary and Ramesh Chander Dogra, lost.
The Congress put up its worst-ever show in Jalandhar district where it lost all nine seats. In the remaining Doaba districts of Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr, it managed to get two seats each.In Hoshiarpur, the Congress won two out of the seven seats, while one was won by Congress rebel Rajnish Kumar Babbi, son of former speaker Kewal Krishan, against BJP minister Arunesh Shakir (from Mukeraina constituency). In Garshankhar, Congress candidate Luv Kumar Goldi, who managed to retain his seat in 2007, lost to SAD's Surinder Singh Bhulerathan.
In Nawanshahr district, the Congress won two out of three seats €" Nawanshahr and Banga. Banga's sitting SAD MLA Mohan Lal lost to Congress's Tarlochan Singh here.Rana Gurjit Singh of the Congress defeated SAD's sitting MLA from Adampur Sarabjit Singh Makkar in Kapurthala constituency. In Sultanpur Lodhi, sitting SAD legislator and Finance Minister Bibi Upinderjit Kaur lost to Congress's Navtej Singh Cheema. BJP was able to wrest Phagwara from Balbir Raja Sodhi of Congress.
In Jalandhar district, the SAD-BJP alliance swept the polls, with Akalis winning on six seats and their ally bagging the remaining three. Veteran Akali leader Kuldip Singh Wadala's son Gurpratap Singh Wadala won in Nakodar, defeating Congress heavyweight Amarjit Singh Samra, who was the only Congress candidate to secure a victory in the district in 2007.The Congress put up its worst-ever show in Jalandhar district where it lost all nine seats. The two Chaudhary brothers who contested from two reserved seats in Jalandhar too, faced defeat. Both Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, a five-time winner from Kartarpur (SC) seat, and Santokh Chaudhary, who contested from Phillaur, lost to SAD leaders.
